MLAS PROMOTING DISABILITY AWARENESS WEEK
June 1, 2006
OPPOSITION MLAS PROMOTING DISABILITY AWARENESS WEEK
Doucet and Doherty to bike from Saint John to St. George
Fredericton – They won’t be riding a bicycle built for two but two Opposition MLAs are hoping a bike ride will raise awareness of disability issues. Rick Doucet (LIB – Charlotte) and Dr. Ed Doherty (LIB – Saint John Harbour) are planning to bike from Saint John to St. George on June 3 to promote Disability Awareness Week.
“Disability Awareness Week is about breaking down barriers and increasing inclusion of New Brunswickers with disabilities,” said Mr. Doucet.
“We hope that by giving ourselves a bit of a challenge, we can bring attention to these important issues,” added Dr. Doherty.
The pair will depart from the Lancaster Mall at 9:30 a.m. on June 3. They will participate in a wrap-up barbeque at the St. George Curling Club at 1:30 p.m.
“We’ve invited area bike shops and clubs to join us for this event,” said Doucet. “This isn’t a race but just a chance to get out and support New Brunswickers with disabilities. We’re welcoming anyone who wants to join us at any point in the ride, whether it’s to bike a little or a lot.”
Disability Awareness Week (DAW) continues the tradition of National Access Awareness Week first established in 1988 to promote better community access for people with disabilities. 2006 will mark the 19th consecutive annual Disability Awareness Week in New Brunswick.
This event was made possible by the support of the Kiwanis Club of St. George and Vocational Plus, an organization which provides skills training and recreation to adults with developmental delays in the St. George area.
